The small print

Privacy

This site collects nothing. That is not a policy position, it is a description of the code.

Nobody is at the other end of this. This is a demonstration website. Woodside Memorial Funeral Home is not a real funeral home, nobody answers the telephone number on this site, and no arrangement made here reaches anybody. If someone has died and you need a funeral director, please call a real one in your area.

What this website collects

Nothing. In detail, and in the order somebody checking would check it:

  • There is no contact form anywhere on this site. There is nothing to submit and no field to type into.
  • It sets no cookie of its own, and there is no consent banner because there is nothing to consent to.
  • There is no analytics of any kind: no page-view counter, no tag manager, no heat map, no session recorder.
  • There is no advertising pixel, no conversion tracker and no social network button.
  • The typefaces are the ones already on your device. No font is fetched from anywhere.
  • There is no map embed, no video player from another site, no chat widget and no third-party script of any sort.
  • Every request your browser makes while loading these pages goes to this site's own address and nowhere else.

That last one is the check that makes the rest of it verifiable rather than a claim: open the network panel in your browser, load any page here, and every line in it will be this site.

The one thing that does exist is the ordinary access log every web server in the world keeps — the address that asked for a page, the moment it asked, and which file it wanted. That belongs to the machine serving the files rather than to anything written into these pages, and nothing on the site adds a line to it or reads it back.

What a real funeral home would have to say here instead

This is the part worth reading if you are looking at this site to decide what to buy, because the page you would need is not this page. A funeral home holds some of the most sensitive material any small business ever holds, and its privacy notice has to be a real document rather than a paragraph.

It would have to say what is in an arrangement record, which is more than people assume:

  • Health information about the person who died, because the paperwork requires it and because some of it changes what may be done and when.
  • The names, addresses and relationships of the living family, and which of them holds the authority to decide.
  • Who was told what, and when, which is the part families care about most and ask about least.
  • Payment details, and whether an insurance policy or a benefit was assigned towards the account.
  • The wishes themselves, including any left in writing years earlier by somebody now dead.

Then it would have to answer the four questions that follow from that, in plain words rather than in the language of a privacy policy: who inside the business can see a record and who cannot; which of it is passed outward, to whom, and because of what — a physician, a registrar, a cemetery, a crematory, a consulate, an insurer; that it is never sold and never given to anybody marketing anything to a bereaved family; and how long each part is kept.

The last of those is the one this demonstration cannot fill in honestly. A record of this kind is kept for a period set by law rather than by preference, and a real page here would name the period, name the rule it comes from, and say what happens at the end of it. Inventing that number would be inventing a fact about the state of New York, so it is left as the shape of a sentence with the number missing.

It would also have to say how a family asks what is held about them, how a mistake gets corrected, and who to complain to if the answer is unsatisfactory.

Who operates this website

Nobody, in the sense the question means. Woodside Memorial Funeral Home, LLC does not exist and neither does the building. The site is a demonstration built by the web design studio credited at the foot of every page, and the terms page says the rest of it plainly.

If you are looking at this as a business owner

The privacy notice on a real funeral home's site is a document its own lawyer writes. What this page demonstrates is the shape of it and where the honest gaps are.
